Lifestyle Tips While On GLP-1’s
-
Store medication in the refrigerator.
Keep a sharps container and dispose of needles appropriately.
-
Rotate the injection site weekly.
Mark the calendar weekly to keep track of injection site, dose, and progress.
Titrate per protocol. We aim to keep patients on the lowest effective dose to minimize side effects.
-
Monitor for signs of allergic reactions at the first dose and weekly for injection site reactions.
Seek medical help for severe reactions. Contact Beyond Your Skin for mild reactions.
Seek emergency attention for swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
-
Drink 60-120 ounces of water every day. Hydration is essential for weight loss and wellness.
-
Limit or abstain from alcohol.
Limit sugary foods and drinks, high-fat and greasy foods, and processed foods to avoid unwanted side effects.
-
Mild side effects include stomach discomfort, reflux, headache, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Manage mild symptoms at home and report severe side effects to your provider.
-
Walk at a brisk pace for 20-60 minutes at least three days a week.
Include resistance or weight training to help minimize the loss of lean muscle mass.
-
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Being a day or two late is okay, but consistency with the injection is important.
-
Stop taking GLP-1 at least one week before any elective surgery or procedure.
Discuss with your surgeon and anesthesiologist that you are on this medication and follow their guidelines on when to stop and resume the GLP-1.
-
Report severe side effects such as vision changes, yellowing of the eyes or skin, severe abdominal pain, uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea, severe constipation, urinary changes (dark or decreased urine output), sustained stool changes (pale color), or a lump in the neck.
-
Eat a high-protein, low-carb diet. Eat the protein on the plate first as GLP-1 promotes early satiety.
Aim for 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight (1 kg = 2.2 lb).
Eat three balanced meals each day and two snacks. Ensure a healthy diet to avoid forgetting to eat or not eating enough.
-
Take plenty of probiotics (Culturelle), fiber (25 grams per day), and ensure good hydration.
